After reading of SuperNana and the Hypoxiettes' ride yesterday, it seemed hill repeats were a good idea for my Sunday ride today. (Darn you SuperNana! Why couldn't you stay home and knit, or bake cookies or something!)

We have very little altitude here in R-Town, so hill repeats are necessary. I chose four hills today with a rolling route between them. Even so, near as I can figger, it was only about 1,300 to 1,600 feet of climbing. I have to get one of those altimeter thingies one of these days.

The climb up from BeeBee Station.
The climb up from BeeBee Station at the bottom of the river gorge. Three repeats.

Chapel Hill in the U of R
Chapel Hill on the University of Rochester River Campus. That's the Interfaith Chapel dead ahead behind those trees. Here on the north side, some genius decided a roundabout would be a good thing to put right in the middle of the hill. Climbing the north side it isn't bad, in fact it's a nice little break. Descending this side it's… uh… a challenge. Especially that darned manhole cover smack in the middle of an otherwise perfect line. Five repeats.

I rode the rolling hills of Westfall Road to the east side, where I got busy dodging a city snowplow on the third climb, so no pics from that one. Five repeats of the east side of Cobbs Hill.

View from the top of Cobbs Hill
View of downtown Rahchacha from the top of Cobbs Hill, the highest point within the city limits. Three repeats up, around the reservoir and back down. Sledders and snowboarders crowded the top and eyed me pretty suspiciously every time I went by.

Me blocking the view.
And finally, yrs trly, blocking the view. Some professional photographer required a Cadillac STS and two helpers to tote a digital vidcam and tripod to this very point. I wedged myself, my Trek Portland, and my little Kodak in while they were setting up their shot. They too eyed me suspiciously.

Count your blessings, Baltic! It is SO much better to be a Dwarf than to be the TROLL.

*SOB* Today my SWAN was out there waiting and calling for me. But the camera refused to cooperate with Mr. Pansy and I have no photo of me with my baby! We haven't seen each other since December 2007 and although Mr. Pansy would look for him....no sightings until today. Because SWANEE doesn't like anyone but me so he just hid out waiting for my return.

Today I climbed to and rode over the Horsetooth Dams Road. I could say it gets as steep as 18% in places and has many long climbs, including a half-mile stretch of 10%. But really, there's no good way to describe it.

So I show you video* and graphs instead:

*I had the frames-per-second resolution turned down a bit. Sorry. But BalticTiger likes the heavy breathing.

And here I was glad I could do hill repeats two days in a row.

Well anyway, it got up to 65°F today, and was sunny all afternoon. That's cause for celebration around here.

Feeling pretty good after yesterday's ride, I set out on the Portland for more hill repeats. Rich's Dugway is a favorite of area cyclists. It's off the beaten path, scenic, interesting homes along the way, has curious pavement faults, and for around here, it's a pretty good climb at 150 ft in a half-mile.

Looking down Rich's Dugway
Looking down Rich's Dugway from near the top.

Of course, down around the corner snowmelt was a rushing torrent down the middle of the street. That made the climb all the more interesting. I planned on three repeats, got in five. All the while calculating how many I have to do in preparation for The Epic Century.

Let's see. This is 150 feet, the Epic has a 6,000 foot climb. 150 goes into 6,000 40 times.

Coast back down for another repeat...

The Epic's big climb is 30 miles, this is a half-mile, so that's 60 repeats for distance, but only 40 for vertical.

Coast back down for another repeat...

Okay. Half a mile is, let's say 2,600 feet. 26 goes into 150 a little less than six times so this is roughly a 6% grade, on average, so is the Epic. I'm doing this in 30/21, so maybe I won't have to take my 16-27 cassette to Colorado.

Coast back down for another repeat...

So I'm averaging 10 mph on the climb, which is better than I thought. That's three hours climbing on the Epic. But here, I also use time on the descent, let's say half the time, so if I can do this for 4½ hours, I should be able to do the Epic.

Coast back down for another repeat...

So how am I going to keep track of that many repeats? Maybe I can put a chalkboard on the side of the store at the top. At least with the store here I won't have to carry 4½ hours worth of water.

Coast back down for another repeat...

But how does the break I get on every descent effect the climbing endurance I'll need on the Epic? I had no firm answer for that.

Then I decided to do a little recon. The bike club's season kickoff ride is in two weeks and starts nearby. I found it, and it was another climb back out of the park to come home.
